Home birth is an opportunity for healthy moms and babies to deliver in the peace and comfort of their own home. It is a wonderful option for women who take responsibility and initiative to promote their own health and well-being.
When considering that all births before the late 19th century and the majority of births until the 1940’s took place at home, we know birth works! Our populated planet tells the story. Delivering at home affords the opportunity to simplify the process in order to realign women with understanding and working with their bodies to accomplish this amazing feat safely, confidently, and naturally! Home births have been proven to lead to less interventions and morbidities.
While home birth does allow women to take initiative and create an environment most conducive to the birth process, it is not an escape from monitoring, testing, or professional input that may lead to further intervention. The dramatic decrease in infant and maternal mortality after the introduction of medical care for pregnancy and birth, demonstrates the need for intervention for certain women and babies. My goal as a home birth midwife is to monitor each pregnancy, birth, and postpartum to predict, to the best of my knowledge and foresight, that each woman and baby are candidates for a successful natural birth, avoiding morbidity and mortality. This may require smaller interventions along the way to prevent bigger interventions and/or issues. Simultaneously, it is a priority to discuss the health of you and your baby with you to allow for participation in informed decision making.
